REVALE WHALES

The city authorities placed two whales in the center of Rewal. In fact, they are whale skeletons made of weather-resistant, specially reinforced steel.

And why whales? The answer can be found in one of the local legends. A long, long time ago, in a time when man was virtually helpless against the forces of nature and life was governed by different laws, a giant whale appeared near the beach in Rewal. A strange seizure overwhelmed the local people who had never seen such a large creature before. Without a second thought, it was decided to pull him ashore. For this purpose, all the horses from the area were harnessed to the whale. The idea was almost a breakneck, because the animals, sinking into the sand, were not able to drag such a colossus. No further attempts were made, but a raging storm came to the rescue and threw the pounders onto the beach. What did the people do then? They dismembered the animal, sharing the valuable meat, and transported its skeleton to a nearby church in Trzęsacz, where it lay for years. With the closure of the temple on the cliff, one of the whale ribs was moved to the cathedral in Kamień Pomorski. This is also where the application ends.

The local authorities, drawing on this history, decided to make the whales a symbol of the commune. Hence the idea to make and install their enormous images. Tourists visiting Rewal often wonder what is the relationship between the resort and whales, which do not live in the Baltic Sea. In fact, it is not their natural habitat, but over the centuries, these marine mammals have been observed many times in the Baltic Sea. For this reason, it is suspected that the real story may be a more or less colored description of the actual event.

The sculptures themselves are two colossi weighing 10 and 5 tons, bearing Latin names: Ventus and Fluctus, meaning Wind and Wave. They are located in the central part of the new square, lined with granite slabs. There is also a fountain on the square, the water of which is illuminated after dark. This place, along with the nearby viewing platform, is the center of Rewal.

THE PARK OF MINIATURES AND RAILWAYS

The Park of Miniatures and Queues in Dziwnów is a place where you can feel like Gulliver in the land of Liliputów. In this picturesque, green area of the park, you can admire miniatures of lighthouses from the Polish coast and replicas of locomotives, wagons and steam locomotives with rolling stock. All this is made by hand, with great care and the reproduction of the smallest details and colors.

The lanterns are made in a 1:10 scale, which means that, for example, the 45-meter-high lighthouse in Niechorze is only 450 cm here and you can see all its architectural details. Each of the buildings, of course, has its own history, and often also interesting legends that can be heard while visiting. And there is something to see, because there are miniatures of the highest lighthouse by the Polish sea - that is the one in Świnoujście, the experienced lighthouse in Kołobrzeg, and the smallest of all, the "lighthouse" from Jastarnia.

As for the queues, there are also a lot of them here. And they run on over 1000 meters of track, with miniature train stations, stations, semaphores, switches and tunnels. Here you can come across miniatures and replicas of actually existing locomotives and steam locomotives with rolling stock, as well as fairy-tale trains that will especially appeal to the youngest children. Of course, miniature railwaymen watch over the trains, and tiny passengers wait for their trains at stations. In addition, the locomotives make noises and let out smoke from the chimneys as they rush along the rails - just like real trains.

After more than 300 meters of the route, you can ride a replica of a real Px48 steam locomotive. Smoke comes out of the chimney and you can hear the sounds of a real steam engine from inside. The only Park Railway Px48 in Poland has been reduced exactly 6 times and very faithfully recreated. Children and adults can ride the cable car.

RUINS OF THE GOTHIC CHURCH ON THE SKARP

The location near the cliff shore was not an attraction or a source of pride for the inhabitants in the past. On the contrary, the sea near the settlement of Trzęsacz was called "the drown of the dead". All this is due to the erosive processes that were extremely progressive in this place. The victims of this process are the former inhabitants of Trzęsacz and the gothic church of st. Nicholas, erected in the middle of the village, in the 13th century. History reports that the church was built about 2 km from the shoreline of the Baltic Sea. It was rebuilt from wooden to brick in the 15th century. The stone foundations remained the same. The church was the pride of the owners of Trzęsacz and their inhabitants. It was looked after by spending large sums of money on furnishing and repairs.

However, fate did not favor the church from the very beginning. In 1650, a wooden tower was added to it, which was destroyed by lightning after 100 years. Then the village and the church were robbed by the Russians during the Seven Years' War. Over the course of these several hundred years, the distance from the sea to the church decreased regularly.

In 1750, the distance between the building and the shoreline was only 58 m. 21 years later, erosion processes destroyed the church cemetery. It was this event that prompted the inhabitants to call the Baltic Sea "drowning the dead".

In 1818, the aforementioned tower was completely destroyed by strong winds and the inhabitants decided to dismantle it. In 1868, the cliff was only a meter from the church, and erosion continued despite attempts to stop the water from being washed away. In the church, some windows were bricked up to eliminate the noise. The last mass was celebrated on August 2, 1874.

Then, the furnishings of the church were taken to the Cathedral in Kamień Pomorski, as well as to the Szczecin and Berlin museums. The church began to slide down in 1900. The following years brought devastating effects of the waves, until February 1, 1994, when only a fragment of the southern wall and the chancel was left of the church.

It was not until 2001 that work began on strengthening the cliff in order to preserve the remains of the church. This time, local authorities managed to stop the erosion. Thanks to this, today we can see a fragment of the church, whose history arouses the interest of people from all over the world.

The fascinating fate of the ruins is also related to several interesting legends referring to the taking of subsequent parts of the building by the sea waves ...
